Abstract
Bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) has antioxidant benefits. One of the free radical formers, namely cigarette smoke containing carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, nitrosamines, nitrosopyrolidine, formaldehyde, pyridine, benzopyrine causes ischemia, necrosis, and damage to heart muscle cells. This study aims to determine the IC50 value of bay leaf extract and Vipro-G as well to determine the antioxidant activity of bay leaves in protecting the heart from free radicals. This study used 36 male mice which were divided into 6 groups. Group 1 as a normal group, group 2 (negative control group) were given CMC 0.5% 1ml, group 3 (positive control group) was given vipro-G at a dose of 520mg / Kg BW, and group 4.5.6 were given bay leaf extract with consecutive doses of 3.5g / Kg BW, 7g / Kg BW, 14g / Kg BW. Giving was done orally and exposed to electric cigarettes for 30 days. Observations were seen from the results of the IC50 value and the results of cardiac histopathology after treatment. The results of treatment in test animals, antioxidant activity provides protection and repair of damage to heart muscle cells. The effective dose was obtained from the bay leaf extract at a dose of 7g / Kg BW. The IC50 value of bay leaf extract is 32.775 ppm, less than 50ppm, which means that antioxidants are very high.
