Abstract

Breast cancer is a malignant cancer that occurs in the cells breast. Cervic cancer is cancer that grows in the cell cervix. Utilization of natural materials as cytotoxic agents is an alternative cancer therapy being developed. Pegagan utan (Merremia emarginata (Burm.F)) and bidara upas (Merremia mammosa) are plants that have been used empirically by the community to treat tumors. This study aims to determine the cytotoxic activity of the pegagan utan (Merremia emarginata (Burm.F)) and bidara upas (Merremia mammosa) which have an active compound mechanism that has the potential to become a cytotoxic agent against cell cultures of cervic and breast cancer. The method used in this study is literature search by Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Science Direct and analyzing the literature that include inclusion criteria. Data obtained were analyzed to compare the most potent plants to be used as cytotoxic agents. The results of literature search showed that Merremia emarginata (Burm.F) and Merremia mammosa had cytotoxic activity. Compounds that have the potential to become cytotoxic agents in Merremia emarginata (Burm.F) are flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols, saponins, terpenoids, alkaloids, steroids, scopoletin, coumarin and Merremia mammosa are flavonoids, tannins, quercetin.
