Abstract

The use of dentures if they do not maintain proper oral hygiene can be a place for attachment of food debris which can increase the number of microorganisms in the oral cavity, one of which is the fungus Candida albicans. One of the natural disinfectants is plant turi (Sesbania grandiflora Pers.). Turi leaves contain saponins, flavonoids and tannins which are reported to have antifungal effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the MIC value and the effective concentration of turi leaf extract which has antifungal activity in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans ATCC 10231 on acrylic resin plates. The simplicia of turi leaves was macerated with 70% ethanol as solvent. The extraction results were then carried out by phytochemical tests, TLC tests and antifungal activity. Acrylic resin plate samples with a size (10x10x1) mm of 15 were divided into 5 immersion groups, namely the 12,5%, 25% and 50% turi leaf extract concentration group, the negative control group (sterile distilled water) and a positive control (chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2%). The results of statistical calculations using the One-Way ANOVA test and followed by the Post Hoc LSD test to see which treatments have significant differences between groups. Phytochemical results obtained by saponins, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, and terpenoids. The results showed that the MIC value was at a concentration of 12,5%, and a concentration of 50% which was the most effective in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans fungi on acrylic resin plates. Keywords: Acrylic resin, Candida albicans, turi leaf extract.
