Abstract

Onion peel (Allium cepa L.) is a waste from shallot tubers that are often discarded and cause environmental pollution. Onion peel contains many flavonoid compounds that have the ability as antioxidants. The results of previous research showed that onion peel extract has an SPF value classified as ultra protection so that it can be used as sunscreen. This study used 3 formulas with ethanol extract content of onion peel 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% plus one control formula. Preparations are made using carbopol 940 gel base and performed physical quality test gel preparations as well as sunscreen protection test in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that sunscreen gel preparations for ethanol extract of onion peel have good physical quality. In vitro and in vivo gel sunscreen protection tests showed sunscreen protection activities with SPF values at concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% respectively of 11.12±0.30, 20.56±0.29, and 31.23±1.07, respectively.
