Abstract

Cervical cancer is the cause of death of women with the largest number of sufferers caused by the HPV virus (Human Papilloma Virus).treatment therapy that is often done is chemotherapy with cytostatic drugs, but this therapy has unwanted side effects. This study aimed to determine the cytotoxic activity of red lettuce against HeLa cells and to determine the fraction of red lettuce that had the most potent cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells. The method used for this test is the MTT assay using the IC50 value parameter to determine the cytotoxic activity of HeLa cervical cancer cell cultures. The principle of the MTT assay method is to purple formazan crystals with the help of the tetrazolium succinate enzyme. The result of the cytotoxic test on red lettuce extract and fraction against HeLa cancer cells obtained IC50 values, namely ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction respectively 158,125 μg/mL; 53,456 μg/mL; 130,828 μg/mL; dan 144,544 μg/mL. the most potent fraction in this study is the n-hexane fraction which contains chemical compounds of alkaloids, tannins, and steroids.
