Abstract

Tea leaves (Camellia sinensis L.) have antioxidant activity that can neutralize the effects of free radicals and regenerate nerve cells. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of extracts and fractions of tea leaves and to find out which tea leaf fractions were the most optimal for memory-enhancing effects. This research was conducted using the radial arm maze method to determine the potential for improving memory in test animals using 6 test groups of male mice of Swiss Webster strain. The first group was given CMC Na 0,5% as a negative control, the second group was ginkgo biloba 10,4 mg/kg BB, the third group was tea leaves extract 270 mg/kg BB, the fourth group was the n-hexane fraction, 12,25 mg/kg BB, the fifth was the ethyl acetate fraction 142,22 mg/kg BB, the sixth group was the water fraction 132,2 mg/kg BB. Parameters measured were time finding food and error type B. the result of the observations were analyzed using SPSS version 21 to determine the differences between each treatment group. The resultshowed that extract and fraction of tea leaves had an effect on improving memory in mice inducted by lead (II) acetate. The ethyl acetate fraction at a dose of 142,22 mg/kg BB showed the strongest memory enhancement activity Keyword : memory, tea leaves, tea leaf extract and fraction, radial arm maze
