Abstract
Water apple plant (Syzygium samarangense (BL)) Merrill & Perry is a plant that is spread throughout the world. Water apple leaves contain several secondary compounds that have hepatoprotective activity. The compounds contained are flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids. These secondary compounds have the ability as antioxidants as free radical scavengers. The aim of the study was to determine the activity of guava leaf extract as a hepatoprotector induced by a toxic dose of paracetamol. This type of research is experimental research. The test and induction preparations were administered simultaneously once a day orally with an interval of 30 minutes for 14 consecutive days. Checking ALT and AST levels was started on one day before the test and induction preparations were given, then continued checking on the 15th day after the test and induction preparations were given. Variations in the dose of water apple leaf ethanol extract used in the study were 100 mg/kgBW; 200 mg/kgBB; 400 mg/kgBW, plus oral administration of the phytopharmaca curcuma as a positive control. Data analysis of ALT and AST levels was statistically processed using SPSS software including one-way ANOVA test and paired sample T-Test. The results showed that water apple leaf ethanol extract had the ability to prevent liver damage in rats induced by paracetamol. The effective dose of water apple leaf ethanol extract which has activity as a hepatoprotector and hepar histopatholigical is a dose of 400 mg/kgBW which has an activity or effect equivalent to the herbal medicine curcuma (20 mg) as a positive control.
