Abstract

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a plant that is contains flavonoid, saponins, and tannins which act as antihyperglycemic agents. This study aims to determine the effective dose of basil leaf extract that can reduce blood glucose levels in mice induced by alloxan and to determine the potential of basil leaf extract in reducing postprandial blood glucose levels in mice fed with feed. A total of 30 male mice were then divided into 6 treatment groups. Group 1 (normal control), group II (negative group CMC Na 0.5%), group III (positive control glibenclamide), group IV (basil leaf extract 125mg/kgBW mice), group V (basil leaf extract 250 mg/kgBW mice), and group VI (extract of basil leaf extract dose 125mg/kgBW mice). After 30 days of treatment, the data on the blood sugar levels of the test animals were analyzed using the SPSS one way ANOVA method followed by the Tukey test. The study showed that extract of basil leaves at 250 mg/kgBB (mencit) is an effective dose because it has the ability to lower blood glucose levels in high induced alloxan and the extract of basil leaves cannot lower the postprandial glucose level on feeding. Keywords: alloxan, basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaf extract, glibenclamide
