Abstract

Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera Lamk.) contain quercetin, a flavonoid compound, which is reported to have potential antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of chemical compounds in Moringa leaves and to determine the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract fraction of Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera Lamk.) using the DPPH method. Phytochemical screening of compounds in Moringa leaves was carried out using the tube test method and the TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) test. The antioxidant activity test was carried out by in vitro DPPH method and read the absorbance value using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 517 nm. The absorbance obtained then calculated the % of free radical reduction and the IC50 value. The lower the IC50 value, the stronger the antioxidant activity. The results of phytochemical screening of Moringa leaves obtained compounds that have the potential as antioxidants, namely flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. The results of the in vitro test obtained the IC50 value of the n-hexane fraction of 270.740 ppm with weak antioxidant activity and the ethyl acetate fraction of 173.181 ppm with moderate antioxidant activity.
