Abstract

Sunscreens are made to reflect or absorb ultraviolet rays so that they can reduce the amount of ultraviolet radiation that is harmful to the skin. The chromophore group in flavonoid compounds is a conjugated aromatic system that causes the ability to absorb light strongly in the wavelength range of ultraviolet light. The research was conducted in order to see stevia leaf extract in gel form which has good physical quality and stability, in vitro and in vivo SPF values and sunscreen protection activity on stevia leaf extract gel preparations. Stevia leaf extract was obtained using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as a solvent. Stevia leaf extract gel preparations are made in 3 formulas with various extract concentrations, namely 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%. The gel preparations were tested for physical quality, stability, determination of the SPF value and erythema test using female rabbits (New Zealand) irradiated with an exoterra ultraviolet B lamp for 24 hours. The results showed that the sunscreen gel preparation of the ethanol extract of stevia leaves had good physical quality. In vitro sunscreen protection test and in vivo gel ethanol extract of stevia leaves showed sunscreen protection activity with SPF values at concentrations of 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% respectively, namely 21,35, 26,38, and 30,65. Key words: Stevia leaves (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni M.), SPF, Sunscreen gel, ethanol extract.
