Abstract
Endophytic bacteria are bacteria that live in plant tissues and are capable of producing the same secondary metabolites as their host plants. The secondary metabolites of medicinal plants were obtained by isolating endophytic bacteria. The cinnamon plant (Cinnamomum Burmannii) has an antibacterial effect. The purpose of this study was to determine the genus of endophytic bacterial isolates from cinnamon which have antibacterial potential against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The research was conducted in several stages, namely isolation of endophytic bacteria, identification of endophytic bacteria, fermentation of endophytic bacteria, and antibacterial potential test. Identification of endophytic bacteria was carried out by macroscopic, microscopic, and physiological methods, namely biochemical tests so that the genus of endophytic bacterial isolates that had antibacterial potential in Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 could be identified. Based on the results of macroscopic, microscopic, and physiological identification, the endophytic bacterial isolates belonged to the genera Pseudomonas, Serratia, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Bacillus, and Staphylococcus. The results of the antibacterial potential test against S. aureus ATCC 25923 showed that all genera of endophytic bacteria isolates had moderate antibacterial potential, with the largest average diameter of 9.68 mm produced by bacteria of the genus Bacillus. This is because the genus Bacillus produces antibacterial polymyxin, colystin, and circulin. The formation of a clear zone indicates that endophytic bacteria produce secondary metabolites that have antibacterial potential.
