Abstract

Sunscreen is a cosmetic preparation whose purpose is to absorb and ward off ultraviolet rays, thereby reducing the impact of UV radiation on the skin. Basil leaves have phenolic compounds, namely flavonoids and tannins where these compounds have chromophore groups that can be used as sunscreens because they are able to absorb UV rays. The basil leaf extraction process was carried out by the maceration method using 96% ethanol as the solvent. The basil leaf gel preparation consisted of 3 formulas with different concentrations of carbopol 940, namely 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%. The gel preparations of each formula were tested for physical quality, determination of the SPF value using UV-Vis spectrophotometry and erythema testing using male rabbits irradiated with exoterra UV B lamp for 1 day. The test results of the gel preparation showed that formula 2 with 1% carbopol concentration had the best physical quality and stability. The value of Sun protection factor extract with a concentration of 1% has an SPF value of 36.10 and the three gel formulas have an SPF of ultra protection category with a value of 16.10; 17.78; and 17.59 where the higher the concentration of carbopol, the SPF value will increase because carbopol has a chromophore group capable of absorbing UV rays. SPSS results showed a significant difference. The results of the erythema test for all treatment groups showed no erythema on the rabbit's back. Key words: Basil leave (Ocimum basilicum.
