Abstract
Dental caries is one of the most prominent dental and oral health problems in Indonesia. The main bacterium that causes dental caries is the Streptococcus mutant bacteria. Parijoto fruit (Medinilla speciosa Reinw) contains active compounds that serve as antibacterial, namely, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The purpose of this study was to find out the antibacterial effect of mouthwash preparations ofparijoto fruit extract (Medinilla speciosa Reinw) on Streptococcus mutant bacteria. This study used 3 groups of parijoto extract concentration (Medinilla speciosa Reinw) 5%, 10%, and 20% with positive control using herbal mouthwash circulating in the market with brand enkasari and negative control using gargle base without extract. The results showed that parijoto fruit extract could be formulated into a mouthwash preparations with good pH and ciscosity but had poor stability and cloudy color and had antibacterial activity with the best inhibition zone at 5% concentration with an average diameter of the inhibition zone of 18,33mm which is included in the medium group.
