Abstract

Galactagogue is a agent that can increase or facilitate the production of milk. These compounds are tannins, terpenoids, phenolics, flavonoids and steroids used as compounds that can improve breast milk production. Amaranthus spinosus contains these compounds. This study aims to determine the effect of Galactagogue and the effective dose of ethanol extract of thorn spinach leaves on lactating rats in increasing body weight of rats. The samples use in this study were 30 breastfeeding and divided into 6 groups, group I as normal control without any treatment, group II as negative control given CMC Na 0.5%, group III as positif control given Asiffit 67.86 mg/KgBB, group IV given ethanol extract of thorn spinach leaves 21 mg /KgBW, group V was given ethanol extract of thorn spinach leaves 42 mg/KgBW, and group VI was given ethanol extract of thorn spinach leaves 84 mg/KgBW. The whole group was measured the body weight of the rats every day for 14 days. The results showed that the administration of thorn spinach leaves ethanol extract could increase the weight gain.
