Abstract

Dental caries is a major disease in dental and oral problems. Toothpaste and mouthwash are used to reduce plaque formation that causes dental caries. One of the plants that contain antibacterial activity is the rhizome of the Zingiberaceae family. This review aims to determine the most effective antibacterial activity, chemical compound content, and the best oral dosage form in Zingiberaceae family rhizomes against Streptococcus mutans. Literature is obtained from national and international publication journals obtained from journal providers on the internet as well as from books and e-books, search for published research journals using google schoolar, garuda, repository, or PubMed search engines. Journals were screened based on type, 49 journals obtained with 20 journals that entered the inclusion and exclusion criteria were 29. The method in this study is the prism method by searching for literature, recording the amount of literature, selecting literature according to the research objectives, accessing research papers in full, analyzing them completely, and compiling descriptive results. Based on a review of literature studies, the rhizome that has the most effective Streptococcus mutans antibacterial activity is the Temu Kunci rhizome. The content of compounds that have antibacterial activity are flavonoids, essential oils, saponins, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenols, quinones, steroids, panduratins and tannins in the rhizome of the Zingiberaceae family, and the best formula in inhibiting the antibacterial activity of Streptococcus mutans is oral cavity preparation of turmeric extract toothpaste combined with neem extract with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.5% neem extract and 0.9% turmeric extract resulting in an inhibition zone diameter of 22.50 mm.
