Abstract
Acne is a skin disease that occurs when the skin glands produce a lot of sebum, and it has been studied to have antibacterial activity with a concentration of 10% on Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 which is one of the causes of inflammation in acne. The star fruit extract was formulated in a topical dosage form, namely an emulgel for convenient to use. This study used HPMC as a gelling agent with varying concentrations in the emulgel preparation of star fruit extract to know the physical quality and antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228. This study used three formulas with variations in the basic concentration of HPMC 1%, 3%, and 5% as well as positive and negative controls. The emulgel of star fruit extract from each formula was tested for organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, emulsion type, spreadability, adhesion, protection, viscosity, and activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria ATCC 12228 by looking at the diameter of the inhibition formed. The results of the study stated that the emulgel preparation of star fruit extract at the concentration of 3% HPMC had the best physical quality. The antibacterial inhibition produced against Staphylococcus epidermidis at 1% HPMC concentrastion was 38 mm, HPMC 3% concentration was 36 mm, and at 5% HPMC concentration was 34,17 mm.
