Abstract

Smoking habit is a habit of smoking cigarettes that is carried out in everyday life, which becomes a necessity that is difficult to avoid for people who have a tendency to cigarettes. Hemoglobin is a complex protein that contains iron (Fe) and is found in erythrocytes. Smoking habits can affect the increase in hemoglobin levels because it is a reflex of the body's compensatory mechanism for the low levels of oxygen bound to hemoglobin due to being shifted by carbon monoxide that enters the body through cigarette smoke. Increased levels of hemoglobin in the blood can indicate the occurrence of diseases in the lungs such as pulmonary fibrosis, heart disease, cor pulmonale, and polycythemia vera. Hemoglobin levels in smokers are also influenced by several factors, including the length of smoking, the number of cigarettes smoked, and the lifestyle of smokers. This study aims to determine the description of hemoglobin levels in youth who already have a smoking habit. This research is a descriptive study, primary data collection by checking hemoglobin levels was carried out in March - April 2021 in Sine Hamlet, Kalibatur Village, Kalidawir District, Tulungagung Regency, East Java Province. The subjects of the study were young smokers (10-24 years) totaling 30 people who were taken using the Purposive Sampling technique. The examination of hemoglobin levels was carried out by the photometric method on the Hematology Analyzer. The sample used was venous blood that was given EDTA anticoagulant. The results of the research overview hemoglobin of youth smokers have an average normal value. From 30 samples of youth active smokers, 24 respondents (80%) had normal hemoglobin levels, 5 respondents (17%) had high hemoglobin levels, and 1 respondent (3%) had low hemoglobin levels.
