Abstract

Premature neonates are newborns up to 28 days of age with a gestational age of <37 weeks. Factors that cause premature birth are maternal age, type of work, nutritional status, parity, and distance between pregnancies. In premature neonates, the formation of an immature liver causes the liver to be unable to work optimally in removing bilirubin. Bilirubin is an orange colored substance in the form of crystals which is derived from the final product of the decomposition of heme and globin through an oxidation reduction reaction. Excessive accumulation of bilirubin in the blood circulation results in jaundice of the skin and sclera of the eyes. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of total bilirubin levels in premature neonates in the Caruban Regional General Hospital Madiun Regency in 2020. This type of research is a descriptive study using secondary data with a saturated sample sampling technique on 34 patients at the Caruban Regional General Hospital, Madiun Regency in January - December 2020. The results of the study on total bilirubin levels were carried out on 34 premature neonates, 15 (44%) had abnormal total bilirubin levels and 19 (56%) had normal total bilirubin levels. Keywords: Premature Neonates, Bilirubin, Jaundice.
