Abstract
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light for too long can trigger oxidative stress due to the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). This can cause skin damage. Skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays in the form of acute changes such as erythema, premature aging, and skin cancer. Red demila fruit peel extract (Punica granatum L.) contains polyphenols which are known to have sunscreen activity. This study aims to formulate ethanol extract of red pomegranate peel in emulgel preparations as sunscreen with concentrations of 0.07%, 0.1%, and 0.13% in order to create a preparation that is safe and comfortable to apply on the skin. Red pomegranate peel extract was made by maceration method using 70% ethanol as solvent. The red pomegranate peel extract was formulated in an emulgel preparation and then evaluated for physical quality and stability by cycling test followed by data analysis using Paired T-Test. Determination of the value of Sun Protecting Factor (SPF) of sunscreen emulgel using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using One Way Anova. The results of the research that the red pomegranate peel extract emulgel had good and stable physical quality. Emulgel with the addition of 0,1% extract produces an SPF value of 12,80, 0,2% extract produces an SPF value of 28,56, and 0,3% extract produces and SPF value of 33,62. The most effective emulgel as a sunscreen was the emulgel with the highest addition of extract. Analysis using the One Way Anova method showd that the concentration of the extract that affected the emulgel formula and analysis using Paired T-Test showed that all formulas were stable to temperature and storage time.
