Abstract
Free radicals are one of the factors that can cause various kinds of skin problems. This can be prevented by using skin care that contains antioxidant compounds. One of the plants that have antioxidant activity is telang flower. Previous research stated that the telang flower has a very strong antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of <50 ppm. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of the extract of telang flower when the extract is formulated in a gel preparation. Activity testing was carried out using the DPPH method and then calculated using the probit method from the linear regression equation to determine the IC50 value. The gel formulation in this study was carried out using an extract concentration of 0.01% with a variation of the gelling agent carbopol 940 0.5%; 2%; 0.5%; 2% and the humectant propylene glycol by 20%; 20%; 10%; 10% to see the best physical quality and stability of the four gel formulations. Data processing in each formulation was analyzed statistically using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) application. The results showed that formula 3 had the best stability and physical quality. The antioxidant activity obtained by formula 3 is 198.324 ppm and is classified as a weak antioxidant because the intensity of the IC50 value is between 150-200 ppm. The increase in IC50 value from the extract into the gel preparation occurred because the concentration of the extract was not converted in the gel formula so that the concentration of the extract in the formula was too small.
