Abstract

Matoa leaf (Pometia pinnata J.R Forst and G. Forst) have activity as natural antioxidants because they contain high flavonoid compounds. Serum is a type of cosmetic preparation with a high concentration of active ingredients and low viscosity, which is able to deliver a thin film of the active ingredient on the skin surface. Carbopol 940 is used as a gelling agent that can affect the value of viscosity and spreadability of the preparation. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of variations in carbopol 940 based on the physical properties and stability of the matoa leaf extract serum which has antioxidant activity. Matoa leaf extraction by maceration method using 96% ethanol as solvent. The ethanol extract of matoa leaf was then made into serum with various concentrations of carbopol 940 as follows: at FI, FII and FII the concentration was 0,4%; 0,5% and 0,6%. Extract and formulas were tested for antioxidant using the DPPH (1,1-difenil-2-pikrihidrazil) method. Evaluation of the physical properties of the preparation includes organoleptic test, homogenity test, pH test, viscosity test, dispersion test and stability test. The results showed that the only formula II met the standards for physical quality and stability tests. Variations in carbopol concentration affect the parameters of pH, viscosity and dispersion, because the lower concentration of carbopol caused a decrease in viscosity and an increase in dispersion. The formula that has the best antioxidant activity is formula I, the IC50 value is 69,74 ppm with a value of ±SD 0,800 which is included in the strong antioxidant group. Keyword: antioxidant, matoa leaf extract, serum, carbopol 940.
