Abstract
Chicken egg shells are waste that can pollute the environment. The content of egg shells is almost 95.1%, mainly organic salts, especially calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Calcium is a mineral that is needed by the body. Egg shells can be used as a source of calcium for osteoporosis prevention. Calcium is consumed, generally in the form of micro calcium which is absorbed by the body about 50%, so it often causes deficiency. In order for absorption in the body to be greater, it is necessary to develop technology to make the size to be nano. If in nano, calcium can be directly absorbed by the body perfectly, almost 100%. The purpose of this study was to synthesize nano calcium from eggshell shells and to determine the effect of extraction time and concentration of HCl on the yield and calcium concentration on the synthesis of nanocalcium from chicken egg shells. The method used to synthesize nanocalcium from chicken egg shells is the precipitation method. In this method, the calcium component of eggshell is extracted with hydrochloric acid (HCl) as a solvent. NaOH solution is added to the HCl solution which already contains calcium. This reaction of an acid with a base causes the solution to become saturated and produces a fine, nano-sized precipitate of calcium. Analysis of calcium levels using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotomer method. The results showed that the extraction time and concentration of HCl affected the yield but did not affect the levels of nanocalcium oxide. The longer the extraction time, the greater the yield of nanocalcium oxide from egg shells. The conclusion of this research is that the extraction time and the concentration of HCl affect the yield of nanocalcium oxide. The longer the extraction time and the higher the concentration of HCl, the higher the yield, which is 2 hours and the concentration of HCl 2N is 44.22%. Extraction time and concentration of HCl had no effect on calcium levels in nanocalcium from chicken egg shells. The highest calcium content was obtained at 1 hour extraction time and 1 N HCl concentration of 56.25%.
