Abstract

Kedondong (Spondias dulcis Soland. Ex Park) leaves contain alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin and tannin, serving as antioxidant. Peel-off gel masker is a gel cosmetic preparation, that after having been applied to skin for certain period of time will dry and create elastic transparent film layer that can be peeled. This research aims to find out the effect of HPMC K15M and propylene glycol base combination on physical characteristics and antioxidant activity of kedondong leaves extract peeloff gel. Kedondong leaves were extracted using maceration method with ethanol 70%. Kedondong leaves extract was then processed into peel-off gel masker with percentage extract of 1% and HPMC K15M and propylene glycol concentrations were varied as follows: Formula I (1%:15%) Formula II (2%:10%) Formula III (3%:15%) Formula IV (3%:10%) Formula V (2%:15%). The five formulas were tested to find out the physical characteristics including organoleptic, viscosity, spreadability, drying time, pH, and antioxidant activity was tested using DPPH method. The result of research showed that the increase in propylene glycol concentration impacted on longer drying time and acid pH, while that in HPMC K15M concentration impacted on smaller spreadibility and higher viscosity, thereby lower antioxidant activity with the IC50 score of extract of 58,694 ; 163,519 ; 193,360 ; 211,211 ; 225,242 ; 186,583 ppm for formula I, II, III, IV, and V, respectively.
