Abstract
Breast cancer is a disease caused by a disturbance in breast cell tissue where the cells divide excessively uncontrollably so that they can infect other tissues and form a tumor mass. Lemongrass plants contain essential oils which are commonly used for insect repellent and traditional medicine. The purpose of this study was to find out the activity of the compounds, and the mechanism of activity of the cytotoxic compounds of Lemongrass, in MCF7, T47D and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell cultures based on literature searches. The research method literature review, where the technique to be used is a qualitative technique (meta-synthesis) by searching for journals and articles in online site at Google Scholar with a range of 2011-2020. Entering the keywords "Cymbopogon citratus L. of Breast Cancer on Cell MCF7, MDA-MB-231, T47D", and "Mechanism of Action of lemongrass chemical compounds against cancer cells", Lemongrass contains compounds that have the potential as cytotoxic compounds in breast cell culture MCF-7, T47D and MBA MD-231 seen from the range of values IC50 = 156 – 5.8 ppm strong to very strong cytotoxic activity. The compounds involved are essential oils, citral, NCL-citral, geraniol, geraniol esters, citronella, citronella nano colloids, piperitone, limonene, paramenthadienol isomers, myrcene, and neral. The mechanism of its cytotoxic activity is by stimulating antiproliferative activity in the cell cycle phase and inducing the activity of pro-apoptotic genes and proteins to suppress anti-apoptotic proteins so that the process of cell apoptosis occurs which causes cytotoxicity of cancer cells.
