Abstract

Nipagin is a preservative that is widely used as an antimicrobial in cosmetic products. One example of a cosmetic product whose formulation uses nipagin is body lotion. Nipagin can be used alone or in combination with other antimicrobials or other parabens (propyl paraben, ethyl paraben). This study aims to determine the presence or absence of nipagin and to determine the levels of nipagin in the body lotion sample according to the requirements or not. The analytical method used in this research is TLC for qualitative test and UV-Vis Spectrophotometry for assay. The sample preparation used was sonicated for 10 minutes at a temperature of 30ºC. In this study, method validation was also carried out which included linearity, accuracy, precision, LOD, and LOQ. The absorbance reading of the sample is carried out at a certain wavelength and operating time. The results showed that from 5 samples there were 3 samples of body lotion which were identified as containing nipagin, namely samples A, C, and D. Nipagin levels in sample A were 0.1751% ± 0.016 %; sample C of 0.2053% ± 0.025%; and sample D of 0.2771% ± 0.044%. These results indicate that the three samples containing nipagin still meet the requirements of PerBPOM No. 23 of 2019 concerning Technical Requirements for Cosmetic Ingredients, namely with a maximum concentration of 0.4%.
