Abstract

Galangal rhizome (Alpinia galanga L. Willd.) has active compounds, namely flavonoids, tannins and saponins which are used as antifungals. Galangal rhizome can be developed in the form of extracts and formulated in cream preparations with an emulsifier resulting from the reaction of stearic acid and TEA. The aim of this study was to determine variations in concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine having physical quality, good stability and having antifungal activity. Preparation of ethanol extract of galangal rhizome using maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent. The resulting extract was formulated in a cream preparation with varying concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine in the ratio (5:3, 10:4, 15:5). Cream preparations of galangal rhizome ethanol extract were tested for organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, adhesion, spreadability, emulsion type and stability. The method used for antifungal activity in the preparation is the well-diffusion method as evidenced by the diameter of the inhibition zone. The resulting data were analyzed using the SPSS application and using one-way annova to determine whether or not there was a significant difference between the averages of each cream formulation. The results showed that formulas 1, 2 and 3 had good physical quality and stability, formula 1 had the best antifungal activity, and the ratio of stearic acid and triethanolamine had an effect on the antifungal activity.
