Abstract
Gotu kola (Centella asiatica L. Urban) contains asiaticoside, a saponin which plays a role in the process of forming collagen, a structural protein that plays a role in the process of wound healing. This study aims to find out that gotu kola herb extract can be formulated into a gel dosage form with good physical quality and stability, gel preparations have anti-burn activity and which one provides the most effective burn healing effect. Centella asiatica herb extract was obtained by maceration method using 96% ethanol. And in the vacuum rotary evaporator to get a thick extract. Gel preparations were made in 4 formulas with concentrations of Centella asiatica herb extract 1.25%, 2.5% and 5% in formulas 1, 2 and 3. Formula 4 was a negative control (without extract). The gel was applied to the rabbit's back which had been burned and then given a gel preparation for 21 days. The gel is applied to the rabbit's back using it once a day until the wound diameter is equal to zero or until it heals. Evaluation of gel preparations was carried out by organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH tests, adhesion tests, spreadability tests and stability tests. Physical quality test data and healing time of burns were analyzed using Shapiro – Walk, then using ANOVA and Post Hoc Turkey. The results showed that the gel preparations of Centella asiatica herb extract with concentrations of 1.25%, 2.5% and 5% fulfilled the physical quality test requirements. The higher concentration of gotu kola herb extract in gel preparation has the most effective burn healing activity. At a concentration of 5%, it gives the effect of healing burns and the fastest healing of burns Keywords: gotu kola extract, burns, gel, HPMC.
