Abstract
Whitening cream cosmetics are products that function to brighten and fade black spots on the skin. Hydroquinone is an active substance that is widely abused in cosmetic formulations of whitening creams to prevent skin hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin formation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the hydroquinone content in samples of facial whitening cream circulating in Magetan based on BPOM requirements. This study used samples of face whitening cream circulating in Magetan Regency with five different brands. The test was carried out qualitatively using FeCl3 color reagent and quantitatively using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 200-400 nm, then validation of the analytical method was carried out with the parameters of linearity, precision, accuracy, LOD and LOQ. In the FeCl3 qualitative test, the five samples positively contained hydroquinone. The validation of the analytical method produces a linearity of 0.9996; RSD of 1.19%; % Recovery of 100.49%; with LOD 0.9037 ppm and LOQ 2.7386 ppm, so that the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method meets the requirements for hydroquinone analysis in facial whitening creams. Hydroquinone levels in the samples using the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method were 3.71%, 4.49%; 4.05%; 4.08%; 3.08% so that the five samples did not meet the requirements set by BPOM No. 18 of 2015.
