Abstract

Whitening cream preparation is a type of cosmetic that is used to apply to face skin. Bleaching creams that are circulating in community are often contain hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is an active substance that has a brightening effect for skin. The application of hydroquinone in high doses is harming for skin health. According to regulations issued by BPOM in Indonesia, the use of hydroquinone as a bleach is prohibited. The objective of this study is to prove the content and levels of hydroquinone in whitening creams at beauty clinics in the Purwantoro and Kismantoro sub-districts, Wonogiri Regency. This research includes laboratory experimental research. The prepared samples were then tested qualitatively by color test and TLC test and quantitatively by ultraviolet spectrophotometry method and validation was carried out for this method. The level data obtained have been analyzed statistically. The results showed that three samples of whitening cream at the beauty clinic in the Purwantoro and Kismantoro Wonogiri sub-districts that positive contained hydroquinone is the C sample with level of hydroquinone is 6.56% ± 0.433, which is sample C is not eligible to use.
