Abstract

Spinach leaves (Amaranthus spinosus L) and Dayak bulbs (Eleutherine americana Merr.) used as galactagogues are known to contain alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids and tannins. This study aims to determine the effect of galactagogue and the effective dose of ethanol extract of spinach leaves and Dayak onions on suckling rats in increasing the weight of the baby rats. This research method is experimental laboratory. Ethanol extracts of spinach leaves, Dayak bulbs and their combinations (50:50, 75:25, 25:75) were obtained by maceration with 70% ethanol solvent. Method of testing galactagogue activity with parameters of body weight of rats. All treatment groups measured the body weight of the rat pups for 14 days. The data obtained was tested using One Way ANOVA and the Tukey Post Hoc Test. The results showed that the combined doses effective of ethanol extract of spinach leaves and ethanol extract of Dayak onion bulbs 31.5 mg/kg BW and 30 mg/kg BW (50:50) gave a galactagogue effect as seen from the parameters of weight gain in rats, not significantly different from positive controls.
