Abstract
Diabetes mellitus, characterized mainly by chronic hyperglycemia. Medicinal plants that have antioxidant potential like gedi merah can be used as an alternative treatment to prevent and therefore protect cells against long-term damage. this study aims to determine antihyperglycemic activity, effectively dose blood glucose decreases and pancreatic β cell regeneration of gedi merah leaf. Thirty five male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six group including control, diabetic control, glibenclamide control, extract 100 mg, 200 mg and 400 mg/kg bw streptozotocin-nicotinamide induced except normal control. The test substance is administered daily for 14 days and observed weight gain, decreased blood glucose levels and histopathological improvement of pancreatic organs with Hemaktosilin-Eosin staining. The results revealed that extracts gedi merah leaf has anti-hyperglycemic effects with effective dose 400 mg/kg bw with regenerated Langerhans pancreatic islet cells diabetic rats which was comparable to glibenclamide.
