Abstract

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) is a kind of medical plants containing chalcone, a flavonoid belonged compound. The phytochemical screening showed that ashitaba plant, especially its leaves, can be used as sources of antioxidant, because of their quite high abilities to capture free radicals. This research aimed to determine the antioxidant activity in each cream formula using various concentration base of 80 tween and 80 span and the cream physical stability. Ashitaba leaf extract was obtained by maceration method using 70% ethanol. The cream was made in 5 formulas wherein formula 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 respectively consisted concentration base of 80 tween and 80 span in 4,065:0,935; 4,205:0,795; 4,345:0,655; 4,486:0,514; 4,626:0,374. The antioxidant activity was tested with DPPH and the physical stability comprising organoleptic, homogenity, dispersive power, adhesion, viscosity, pH, and the type of cream was observed as well. The research resulted in ashitaba leaf extracted cream in various formulas had good homogenity. The higher the concentration of 80 tween, the smaller the viscosity and adhesion were, and the higher the scattering power was. The ashitaba leaf extract IC50 value was 43.152 ppm. The result of the antioxidant activities of extracts in the cream showed that the IC50 value of formula 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 respectively were 134.344 ppm, 64.565 ppm, 31.117 ppm, 71.450 ppm, and 35, 156 ppm. The test resulted in the 3 formula cream was the highest antioxidant activity cream. Keywords : ashitaba leaf extract, cream, physical stability test, antioxidant activity test.
