Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disease that occurs due to abnormal secretion of insulin, so glucose in the blood increases and is characterized by progressive changes in the structure of the pancreatic beta cell histopathology. This study to prove about antidiabetic activity as well as a dosage glibenclamide 0,45 mg/kg BB and histopathology pancreatic of ethanol extract of pucuk merah leaf. Thirty Wistar strain of rats male were divided into six groups. Normal group (only given feed), diabetic group (it was induced alloxan), glibenclamide group (it was given glibenclamide 0,45 mg/kg BB), and treatment group (ethanol extract of pucuk merah leaf (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.) dose 150 mg/kg BB, 300 mg/kg BB, and 600 mg/kg BB). Alloxan monohidrat induced intraperitoneally in rats with a single dose of 150 mg/kg BB. Rats were treated for 14 days. Measurement of blood glucose levels performed 0,4,7,and 14 days. After 14 days, pancreatic histophatology performed with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining and observed the damage of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans reviewed from piknotik, karioreksis, and kariolisis. Blood glucose levels and damage of islets of Langerhans were analyzed using One Way ANOVA. The results showed that ethanol extract of pucuk merah leaf (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.) have antidiabetic activity by lowering blood glucose levels and reduce damage of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans which proportional with glibenclamide 0,45 mg/kg BB an effective dosage of 600 mg/kgBB.
