Abstract

Cream is a semi-solid dosage form containing one or more dissolved or dispersed ingredients in a suitable base material. Citronella oil cream can be used as a topical anti-mosquito. Process of making citronella oil cream (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf) need a emulgator to maintain the stability of the cream, such as Span 80 and Tween 60. This study aims to formulate citronella oil in cream preparations with a combination of Tween 60 and Span 80 emulgators and to determine the physical quality and stability of the cream. The citronella oil is made into cream dosage use a vanishing cream base with a combination of emulgator Tween 60 and Span 80. The citronella oil cream is made in 3 formulas which formulas 1, 2 and 3 respectively base concentrations of Tween 60 and Span 80 are 2%: 4%; 3%: 3%; 4%: 2%. The citronella oil cream is then tested for its physical quality which includes organoleptic test, homogeneity, spreadability, viscosity, pH and stability using Freeze Thaw method. The results showed that citronella oil cream with various formulas has good homogeneity. The higher concentration of tween60 results in higher viscosity values and smaller scattering forces. The data obtained were then analyzed statistically by kolmogorov-smirnov test followed by one way anova and post hoc test with 95% confidence. The citronella oil cream with Tween 60 2% concentration and Span 80 4% have the best physical properties such as organoleptis, homogeneity, pH, and spreading.
