Abstract

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a bacterium that triggers inflammation in acne. Plants that have been widely studied as antibacterial are papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.). Emulgel is a combination of emulsion and gel preparations. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of good emulgel preparations and find out the evaluation of emulgel preparations both physically and chemically. Papaya leaf extraction using maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. The extract obtained was made of five emulgel preparation formulas with various extract concentrations of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% in emulgel preparations. Emulgel preparations are tested for physical quality, emulgel stability, and antibacterial activity against inhibitory zones. The data obtained were processed with Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistics. The best formula is formula V with an extract concentration of 10% having the best stability and diameter of inhibitory test. Antibacterial activity test results of papaya leaf extract emulgel on the bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 showed that all formulations had inhibitory zones. The diameter of the inhibitory zone which is close to positive control is the formula V with an extract concentration of 10% that is equal to 11.6 ± 0.4 mm. The results of the T test analysis showed the value (0.079> 0.05) then the effectiveness of emulgel preparations showed a significant difference.
