Abstract

The watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) empirically can be used as diuretic agent. The purpose of this study was to determined the diuretic activity of rind watermelon extract and it’s effect on sodium and potassium levels were measured by AAS ( Atomic absorption spectrophotometry ). The study used rind watermelon with extraction methods maceration and then evaporated to obtain extract. Animal used were male white consisted of 25 rats, divided into 5 treatment groups : hydrochlorothiazide positive control (0.45 mg / 200g bb), negative control CMC 0.5%, and the extract of watermelon rind doses of 350 mg / BW, 700 mg / BW, 1400 mg / BW. Rats placed in metabolic cages that have been modified. Excreted urine volume recorded every hour for 5 hours then 24 hours, and determined the levels of electrolytes sodium and potassium in the urine using AAS. The result of research watermelon rind extract has diuretic activity, doses of 1400 mg / BW was effective dose provide diuretic activity with increasing of urine volume and it’s effect of sodium and potassium levels the white male rats.
