Abstract

Wangon leaves contained chemical compounds such as saponins, tannins, flavonoids, steroids and phenols. This purpose of this study was to determine antibacterial activity of ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate and water from wangon leaves to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria. Wangon leaves was extract with ethanol 96% by maceration method. Extract was collected and fractionated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water. The ethanol extract and fractionation results were tested for their antibacterial activity using diffusion test with different concentrations of 50%, 25%, and 12.5% to determine the most effective fraction. The most effective fraction was then followed by dilution test with various concentrations ie 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 3.125%; 1.562%; 0.781%; 0.391%; 0.195%; 0.098% to know the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). The results showed that ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate, and water from wangon leaves had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The ethyl acetate fraction is the most effective fraction of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria. The concentration of 50% ethyl acetate fraction has an inhibitory zone diameter with an average of 12.5 mm, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration is was unknowable and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration 25%.
