Abstract

Secang Plant (Caesapalpinia sappan L.) allegedly has the efficacy as an antioxidant. The use of Secang wood for topical use is less practical, so gel preparation is made. Then the gel is optimized by Simplex Lattice Design method to produce an optimum formula to produce a stable gel. This research aims to determine the combination of gelling agent carbopol and CMCand humectant glycerin which can produce optimal formula on gel preparation of Secang wood. Extract with 96% penyari ethanol in the form of extract which used for gel preparation using carbopol 940, CMC and glycerine base to obtain 13 formula, then it optimized based on physical properties of viscosity, adhesion, pH and spreading. Simple Lattice Design optimization method using design-expert program 8.0.6.1. The optimum combination of carbopol 940 CMC and glycerin as a base on the manufacture of Secang wood gel extract (Caesalpinia sappan L.) using Simple Lattice Design method those are carbopol 6.1%, 34.4%, and glycerin 14.4%. The result of t-test of viscosity, adhesion, and spreading showed no significant difference. The storage time affects the physical stability of the gel where the gel viscosity tends to decrease for one month of storage.
