Abstract

Hyperlipidemic is characterized by increase in total cholesterol level, triglyceride, LDL, VLDL, and reduced HDL. Hyperlipidemia can develop into atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Matoa leaf (Pometia pinna J.R & G. Forst) contains flavonoid, saponin, and tannin. These three compounds can reduce blood cholesterol level, and prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the body. This study was aimed to determine the effect of the ethanolic extract of matoa leaf in decreasing total cholesterol levels on hyperlipidemic male white rats and to find out the effective dose. This research used maceration method by ethanol. The animals test used 30 male white rats were divided into 6 groups, i.e. normal group, CMC 0,5% group, simvastatin group, and ethanolic extract of matoa leaf groups with 3 various doses groups of 100 mg/kgBW, 200 mg/kgBW, and 400 mg/kgBW. All of these animals test groups, except normal group were induced by high fat diet and PTU for 14 days. Total cholesterol level of these animals test were measured on day 0, 14, and 28 by CHOD-PAP. The results showed that ethanolic extract of matoa leaf dose of 100 mg/kgBW, 200 mg/kgBW, and 400 mg/kgBW could decrease total cholesterol level of blood serum in hyperlipidemic male white rat. The effective dose on decreasing total cholesterol level of blood serum male white rat is 100 mg/kgBW. Key words : matoa leaf, Pometia pinnata, total cholesterol, hyperlipidemic
