Abstract

The red galangal (Alpinia purpurata K schum) contains eugenol, terpenoid (terpinen-4-ol) which has as an antifungal. Bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) Contains sesquiterpenes (zerumbon) and terpinen-4-ol that have activity as an antifungal. The objective of this research is to know the antifungal activity of the combination of red galang and bangle oil against Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The essential oil of red galangal and bangle is distilled by using the method of vapor distillation. The result of red galangal and bangle essential oil was tested by using diffusion disc method with concentration 50%, 25%, 12,5% with ratio (1:1, 1:3, 3:1) then dilution test with dilution method with concentrations of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56%, 0.78%. Positive controls used were 2% ketoconazole antibiotics and 1% negative DMSO control. The parameters used in the diffusion test are the minimum inhibitory concentration (KHM) and on the dilution test parameters used minimum killing concentration (KBM). The result of diffusion test on the combination of essential oil of red galangal and bangle which is most effective at concentration 50% with 3: 1 ratio having inhibit zone of 26,38 mm. In the dilution test the value of KHM obtained is 6.25% and the KBM value is 3.125%. Key word : Alpinia purpurata K schum, Zingiber cassumunar Roxb, essential oils, Candida albicans, antifungal.
