Abstract
The increased oxidative stress in diabetes mellitus (DM) condition can lower the antioxidant defense activity within the body so that the body cannot resist free radicals and it triggers the cellular damage. One of natural antioxidant sources is clove (Syzygium aromaticum. L). The objective of research was to find out the antihyperglicemic activity, the improvement of SOD and GPx antioxidant enzyme activity, and the decrease of MDA level and pancreas histopathology. This research employed posttest only group design. Wistar-strain male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) was conditioned with DM type 2 by inducing them with streptrozotosin 60 mg/kg BW and nicotinamide 150 mg/kg BW. The rats were divided randomly into 9 groups. The doses of clove flower ethanol extract was 200 mg/kg BW, n-hexane fraction was 50 mg/kg BW, ethyl acetate fraction was 100 mg/kg BW, water fraction was 50 mg/kg BW, and positive control (glibenclamide was 0.45 mg/kg BW). The examination was conducted on the antioxidant enzyme activity of SOD GPx, MDA and pancreas histopathology. The result of research showed that ethanol extract and fractions of clove (Syzygium aromaticum. L) had antihiperglicemic activity. The n-hexane fractions of clove (Syzygium aromaticum. L) at dose of 50 mg/kg BW had the best activity as antihiperglicemic, improving the activity of SOD and GPX enzymes and lowered MDA level, improving the Langerhans island regeneration, and improving the number of islet cell, producing Langerhans island insulin.
