Abstract
Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane caused by inhalation of allergenic compounds which then triggers a specific immunologic response involving IgE antibodies. Physical examination may find dark circles around the eyes, swelling of the nasal mucous membranes, nasal secretion, dilute, tear, and swelling of the periobital. Microscopic examination of the peripheral blood smear will find many eosinophils. Eosinophils themselves are one type of white blood cells (leukocytes) that have elevated blood levels in allergy sufferers and worm infections. The purpose of this research is to find out eosinophil picture in patients with allergic rhinitis by the method of blood smear preparation to students of Setia Budi University. This research was conducted at 11 Setia Budi Surakarta University Laboratory with 30 samples of venous blood of University of Setia Budi Surakarta students who have history of allergic rhinitis. The method used in the examination of eosinophils is the preparation of the peripheral blood smear of allergic rhinitis patients, ie by making a blood smear and painted by painting Giemsa, then examined under a microscope until a strong magnification and the results are reported in percentage form. Based on the results of the examination obtained from 30 samples obtained results as much as 16.7% increased eosinophils and 83.3% did not increase eosinophil levels (normal eosinophil levels). For students who experience increased eosinophils it is necessary to maintain a healthy body by regulating diet, resting patterns, and avoid contact with substances that cause allergies (allergens).
