Abstract

TheGynura procumbens (Lour.)Merr.leaf contains saponins, tannins, triterpenes of steroids and flavonoids. Flavonoids and saponins can lower blood cholesterol levels, and block the cholesterol oxidation reactions in the body. This study aims to determine the effect of effective dose and doseof Gynura procumbens (Lour.)Merr.leaf extract in reducing total serum cholesterol levels in male rats. This research used maseration method with 96% ethanol solvent. The test animals used 30 male rats divided into 6 groups, normal control group (without treatment), negative group (CMC 0.5%), positive group (simvastatin 0.01 g), test group ofGynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr.leaf extract with variant doses of 150 mg/kg BW, 300 mg/kg BW, 600 mg/kg BW. Except for the normal group, test animals conduct hypercholesterolemia with a high-fat diet for 14 days and measured total serum blood cholesterol levels on day 7th, day 21th, day 28th with CHOD-PAP method. The results showed that ethanol extract Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. leaf contains saponins and flavonoids which can decrease total cholesterol serum level of male white rat. The most effective dose in lowering the total serum cholesterol level of male white rat is 600 mg/kg BW. Keywords: Gynura procumbens (Lour.)
