Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a disease that caused by impaired metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats due to deficiencies or resistance toward insulin. Okra fruit (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) is one of the plants which is used to medicate diabetes mellitus. This research is aimed to know the activity of anti diabetes and the effective dose of okra fruit ethanol extract to decrease blood glucose levelsinmicethathaveinsulinresistancewithobesityinduction. The tested animals in this research were made to experience insulin resistance by feeding in high fat diet (HFD) for 4 weeks and then it was divided into 6 groups. Group I as normal control; Group II as the diabetic control; group III as a comparison (metformin); group IV, V and VI as a test group of okra fruit ethanol extract with doses of 75 mg/Kg, 150 mg/Kg and 300 mg/Kg bw for 14 days. Blood glucose levels measurementwasperformedondays0,7,and14withglucometer. Theresultsshowed thatethanol extractofokrafruit atdoses of75 mg/Kg, 150 mg/Kg and 300 mg/Kg bb could decrease blood glucose levels in mice which have insulin resistance, and at dose of 300 mg/kg bw the decreased of blood glucose levels showed that there was no significant difference (P > 0,05) with the comparison group (metformin) in the percentage of blood glucose decrease on the 14th day in the amount43.03%andthecomparisongroupintheamount44.38%. Key words: Okra fruit (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench), insulin resistance, antidiabetic.
