Abstract

In the pathological state such as diabetes, increased oxidative stress in the body will cause a decrease in endogenous activity in the body so that the body is unable scavenging free radicals and prevent cell damage. Passiflora foetida leaves one source of natural antioxidants as antidiabetic. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of the ethanol extract of Passiflora foetida leaves as antihyperglycemic and activity in lowering levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). This study was conducted using 30 male Wistar rats induced by alloxan single dose of 150 mg / kg bw intraperitoneally. Divided into six groups, each of 5 rats, group I: normal control, group II: negative control (0,5% CMC), group III, IV and V were treated with ethanol extract of Passiflora foetida leaves dose of 100 mg / kg bw, 200 mg / kg bw and 400 mg / kg bw respectively and Group VI: positive control using glibenclamide dose of 0,45 mg/kg bw. Treatment was given for 14 days. Hypoglycaemic and antioxidant effects were evaluated using the parameters of blood glucose levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in rat liver. The results of this study showed that the ethanol extract of Passiflora foetida leaves dose of 100 mg / kg bw, 200 mg / kg bw and 400 mg / kg bw can lower blood glucose levels of mice and MDA level. The dose most effective in lowering blood glucose and levels of MDA were dose of 400 mg / kg bw. Keywords : Passiflora foetida leaves, antihyperglycemic, malondiadehyde, antioxidant
