Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a group of syndromes characterized by hyperglycemia, changes in lipid metabolism, carbohydrates, proteins, and increased complications of vascular disease. Okra seeds (Abelmochus esculentus L. Moench) is a plant that has a antihyperglycemia activity. This study aims to determine the antihyperglycemia activity of ethanolic extract of okra seeds and the most effective dose of ethanolic extract of oxra seeds as antidiabetic. This study used enzymatic method of glucometer. This study used 25 male white rat were divided into 5 groups: negative control (CMC Na), positive control (Glibenclamide 0,09 mg/200 g bw), ethanolic extract of okra seeds at the dose 2,6 mg/200g bw, 5,2 mg/200g bw, and 10,4 mg/200g bw. induced used alloxan at the doses 30 mg/200 g bw intraperitoneally. All data were tested with Shapiro-Wilk to know the normality of data, then were analyzed by One Way ANOVA test and continued by Tukey HSD test. The results showed that administration of ethanolic extract okra seeds reduced in blood glucose level in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Ethanolic extract of okra seeds at the dose 5,2 mg/200g bw dan 10,4 mg/200g bw can reduced in blood glucose level comparable with positive control glibenclamide in day 15 reduced. Keywords: antihyperglycemia activity, extract of okra seeds, alloxan.
