Abstract

Samio plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is an ornamental plant has long existed in the community. Samio plants contain flavonoids, polyphenols, saponins, and tannins. These substances are suspected of having antimicrobial activity. The aim of this research is to determine the antimicrobial activity from ethanol extract 70% of samio leaf to Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. Antimicrobial activity was performed by diffusion and dilution methods. The diffusion method was performed to find out the antimicrobial activity of samio leaf extract on the four microbes with a concentration variation of 12.5%; 25%; 50%. Dilution method was performed to know the effective microbe with 50% samio leaf ethanol extract with the highest inhibitory concentration.The data then analyzed statistically using Microsoft Excel and SPSS programs. Inhibitory power of samio leaf extract on S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans were respectively 9.3 mm; 8.7 mm; 9.8 mm; and 8.5 mm. Dilution test results of P. aeruginosa obtained KBM value of 12.5% which means that the concentration is effective to kill bacteria P. aeruginosa. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that samio leaf extract has more effective antimicrobial activity against the four microbes, especially P. aeruginosa.
