Abstract

Incidence of burns is common in low- and middle-income countries and mostly injury burns occur at home. Leaf miana (Coleus scutellarioides Bth.) contains flavonoid, saponin, and tannin that have activity in burns healing and anti-inflamatory. This study aims to prove the activity of leaf miana in ointment preparation and the optimum concentration on healing second degree burns. This study used 5 rabbits and made 5 standardized burn locations on the back of each rabbit. Standardization of burns was used a 2 cm metal plate. At the 5 wound sites, were each given prepared ointment with a concentration of 5%, 10%, 20%, mebo ointment (positive control), and ointment bases (negative control) for 21 days with the measured parameters being the diameter of the burn wound. The physical test of ointment including organoleptic test, homogenity, viscosity, dispersion, and adhesion. The data obtained were analyzed with analysis of variance. The results showed that all concentrations of ethanol extract of miana leaf ointment showed the healing effect of burns. A concentration of 20% showed the most optimum effect on the healing of burns with the average percentage of closure the same with wound diameter positive control that is equal to 99.99% on the 21st day.
