Abstract
Red ginger and garlic was one of the main plants used for the treatment of diabetes empirically. Red ginger and garlic were some potent chemical content, such as flavonoids, terpenoids and essential oils. This study aims to determine the antidiabetic activity of combination red ginger and garlic ethanolic extracts as well as to determine the decreased glucose levels effect, analysis of SOD and GPx activity and histology observation of penkreatic β-cells in diabetic rats induced by alloxan. The extraction method used maceration with 96% ethanol. The test animals were divided into seven groups, each group consisted of 5 male rats, the normal control group I (CMC Na 0,1%); II was negative (CMC Na 0,1%); III was positive control (glibenclamide at a dose of 0,09 mg/200 g BW rats); group IV red ginger (250 mg/ kg BW rats); VI was garlic group (15 mg/kgBW rats); V was combination of red ginger and garlic 75:25 (187,5 mg /kg BW : 3,75 mg/kgBW rats); Group VII combinations red ginger and garlic 25:75 (62,5 mg/kgB W: 11,25 mg/kgBW rats). All groups alloxan induced on day 0 intraperitoneally. Examination of blood sugar levels done on day 7 until 28 after administration of the treatment. The test results showed that the ethanolic extract of red ginger and garlic has antidiabetic activity. The combination of red ginger and garlic ethanolic extract 25:75 (62,5 mg/kgBW : 11,25 mg/kgBW rats) can lower blood glucose levels the most effective dose than the other extracts.
