Abstract

Balance blood glucose concentration and antioxidant activity are keys to prevent Diabetes Melitus and its complications. Kersen (Muntingia calabura) a plant that have empirical usage for reducing blood glucose that can do both. This study’s purposes are for observing leaves extract and fraction effects in reducing blood glucose and langerhans islet regeneration. Forty two Wistar male white rats of 16-18 weeks with weight 180-200 g were made diabetes with streptozotosin and randomly divided into 7 groups. Group I as normal rats, group II diabetic rats, group III diabetic with glibenclamid treatment, group IV dan V treated by ethanol extract 250 and 350 mg/kg BW and group VI and VII treated by ethil acetate fraction 250 dan 350 mg/kg BW. treatment had done orally once a day within 18 days. Blood glucose was measured on the 1st, 4th, 11th and 18th day. This study had shown extract and fraction were able reducing blood glucose whereas ethil acetat 350 mg/kg BW has the highgest activity (not significantly different with positive control) and both could improving SOD and GPx activity and reducing MDA concentration and regenerating pancreatic langerhans islet.
